LOTOTO Safe Isolation Audits and Training

LOTOTO safe isolation audits and training for industrial operations. Expert lockout tagout procedures ensuring energy isolation safety and regulatory compliance.

LOTOTO audits and training that prevent serious injuries

Serious injuries and fatalities happen when energy sources are not fully isolated or when safe systems aren't followed correctly. Isolations that rely on assumptions rather than proven safe systems place people at significant risk. We provide practical LOTOTO audits and training to ensure energy sources are properly locked off, tagged, and tested before work begins, helping you move from 'it should be isolated' to 'it has been proven dead.'

FAQs

Common questions about our safety and signage services

How often should LOTOTO training be refreshed?

LOTOTO training should be refreshed at least every three years, or more frequently for high-risk operations. New employees need LOTOTO training before working on energised equipment. Refresher training is needed after incidents, near misses involving isolation failures, or when procedures change. If you introduce new equipment or isolation methods, affected workers need updated training. Many of our clients use a three-year formal refresher cycle with annual toolbox talks to reinforce key messages. The key is maintaining competence over time - isolation procedures can drift if not reinforced. Regular refreshers help maintain standards, catch bad habits developing, and keep isolation safety at the front of workers' minds. Competence must be demonstrated, not just assumed because someone attended training years ago.

Can you supply LOTOTO equipment and signage?

Yes, we supply the essential equipment and signage needed for effective LOTOTO systems. This includes lockout devices for electrical, mechanical, and valve isolation, lockout tags, group lockout boxes, and danger signage. We can advise on what equipment suits your specific machinery and isolation points - different equipment requires different lockout devices. Our signage expertise means we can also supply 'Do Not Operate' tags, isolation procedure signs, and equipment-specific isolation instructions. Having conducted LOTOTO audits and training, we understand exactly what's needed and can specify equipment that works with your procedures. This integrated approach ensures your LOTOTO system is complete - procedures, training, equipment, and signage all working together.

Do you audit existing LOTOTO procedures and systems?

Yes, we audit your current LOTOTO procedures, permit systems, and practical application. We review written procedures against best practice and legal requirements, then observe how isolation is actually carried out on site - because there's often a gap between what's written and what happens in reality. We check whether procedures identify all energy sources, specify correct isolation points, require testing, and prevent unauthorized restoration. We assess lock and tag availability, storage, and management. We examine whether training records demonstrate competence, and whether permit systems properly control work. The audit identifies where procedures are strong and where improvements are needed, with practical recommendations you can implement to strengthen your isolation safety.

What's included in LOTOTO awareness training?

Our LOTOTO training covers energy source identification, isolation procedures, lock and tag application, testing to prove dead, and restoration procedures. We tailor content to your specific equipment and operations - focusing on the actual machinery and energy sources your teams work with. Training explains why each step matters, not just how to follow the procedure. We cover electrical isolation including proving dead with voltage detectors, mechanical isolation of moving parts, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, stored energy hazards, and group lockout for multiple workers. Participants learn when LOTOTO is required, who's responsible, what can go wrong, and how to challenge unsafe practices. Training is practical and scenario-based, not just theory from a textbook.

What is LOTOTO and why is safe isolation training important?

LOTOTO stands for Lock Out, Tag Out, Try Out - the process for safely isolating energy sources before maintenance or servicing work. It's critically important because machinery that isn't properly isolated can start unexpectedly, causing serious injuries or fatalities. Electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and stored energy (springs, gravity, compressed gases) must all be locked off, tagged to show who isolated it, and tested to prove it's dead before work begins. LOTOTO prevents energisation during maintenance and ensures only authorized people can restore energy. Without proper procedures, workers face electrocution, crushing, amputation, or being caught in machinery. HSE prosecutions for inadequate isolation regularly result in substantial fines and custodial sentences following serious injuries.
