FAQs

Common questions about our safety and signage services

What's the difference between SIF and process safety?

SIF and process safety are related but distinct. Process safety focuses on preventing major accidents involving hazardous substances - fires, explosions, toxic releases that could harm multiple people or the environment. It's particularly relevant for chemical plants, refineries, and operations with significant quantities of dangerous materials. SIF covers a broader range of serious injury and fatality hazards including workplace transport, working at height, confined spaces, and machinery risks that affect individual workers or small groups. Many operations have SIF hazards but not process safety hazards - a logistics warehouse has workplace transport and height risks but minimal process safety concerns. Some sites like chemical plants need both approaches. We help you identify which framework applies to your operations and can support both where needed.

How long does SIF risk profiling, gap analysis, and training take?

SIF risk profiling typically takes 1-2 days depending on operation complexity and number of SIF hazards present. Gap analysis duration varies with site size and depth of assessment required - from 2-3 days for focused reviews to 1-2 weeks for comprehensive multi-site assessments. SIF awareness training is usually delivered as half-day or full-day sessions depending on audience and detail required. We can deliver training to multiple groups across your organization, scheduling to minimize operational disruption. Many clients start with a SIF profiling exercise to identify priorities, follow with gap analysis of highest-risk areas, then roll out awareness training to embed understanding. We work flexibly to match your timescales and resource availability.

Who should attend SIF awareness training?

SIF awareness training benefits everyone from shop floor operators to senior leadership, though content is tailored to each audience. Frontline supervisors and team leaders gain the most immediate value - they make real-time decisions affecting SIF exposures daily. Senior management needs SIF awareness to allocate resources effectively and understand where the real risks are. Operators and engineers need to recognize SIF hazards in their work and understand critical controls they must never bypass. H&S professionals benefit from understanding SIF methodologies to strengthen their programs. The key is ensuring people at all levels understand which activities could cause serious harm, what controls prevent those outcomes, and why those controls are non-negotiable. Training creates a shared language around serious risk.

What does a SIF gap analysis involve?

SIF gap analysis examines how work is currently performed and assesses whether existing controls adequately prevent serious injury and fatality scenarios. We identify your SIF hazards, then evaluate control effectiveness against best practice and recognized standards. This includes examining physical controls, procedural controls, supervision, competence, and safety culture. We look for single points of failure where one mistake or control breakdown could cause catastrophic harm. We assess whether controls are applied consistently, whether workers understand why they matter, and whether management systems support safe operation. You'll receive findings showing where controls are strong and where gaps exist, ranked by potential consequence severity. Recommendations focus on critical controls that prevent the most serious outcomes.

What is SIF risk profiling and how does it differ from standard risk assessments?

SIF risk profiling focuses specifically on Serious Injury and Fatality hazards - the activities and exposures that could result in life-changing or fatal outcomes. Unlike standard risk assessments that capture all hazards including minor injuries, SIF profiling concentrates resources on the biggest threats: workplace transport, working at height, confined spaces, mobile equipment, electrical work, and process safety. Many sites have good safety records for minor injuries but remain exposed to catastrophic events. SIF profiling identifies these high-consequence, lower-frequency risks that traditional lagging indicators miss. It shifts focus from incident rates to potential severity, helping you prioritize controls that genuinely save lives rather than just reducing minor injury numbers.
